Anti-Racism Protest, Winner, South Dakota

Justice prevails: Phillip Dog Soldier acquitted read the article by Ruth Steinberger at this link

15 July 2002

Greetings,

This Protest we did to support freedom and justice during this past week left some serious unresolved actions by some of to be expected non-Indian people who serve as" Public Servants" in the Winner, SD area., in the course of all week, not one story from the " Winner Advocate". This in its self is a issue. I notice the paper out of Yankton, SD ran a brief story; The afternoon we were out front of the Tripp County Courthouse, the local All white Winner Fire dept were gathering at there station, There were many insults, taunting and especially in one instance ( they were flying the red, white and blue on their station as well as some of them had them emblems of the american flag on their vehicles and person.) the fireman shouting " We hope they hang that Fucking Indian" ( This is what even those of us who are also Veterans have to put up with) then all of them standing there in the open bay doors laughing it up. was uncalled for. there was a older white male there who must be a ranking officer who could of stopped them. but he too was involved. We have their faces on video. We have some friends who said they can to get it on the net. Now I have questions about their sincerity when and if they were the ones who responded that day when that tragic fire occurred. It sure tarnishd my view of them as public servants. I think the rest of the country and beyond should be made aware of this behavior and outright racism. We Thank GrandFather, an all that is that Phillip Dog Soldier was aquitted that same day.

sincerely

Aho, Thank You Carter, Phillip Dog Soldier was aquitted on both counts and is now home with his family, We shared coffee and a meal with him after he got back to his niece' home, Winner, S.D. is one of the most racist hateful areas in SD. Well we were waiting for the verdict, the racist firemen standing next to the jail and direcly across the street from the courthouse were hollering racial taunts, and saying " we hope the hang the f---ing Indian"

Thanks to Tunkashila and the good hearted People of the World a innocent man is back with his family and Loved one.

Amererican Indians: Man Can't Get Fair Trial

WINNER (AP) -- "As the American flag flew over the Tripp County Courthouse on Wednesday, three other flags were displayed upside down on the lawn beneath it.

It was part of a peaceful protest by as many as 30 people who say they are members of the American Indian Movement.

According to the protesters, Phillip Dog Soldier can't get a fair trial in Tripp County because of racism.

Dog Soldier is standing trial on two counts of manslaughter in connection with a fire last winter. A girl and a boy died of smoke inhalation after the house they were in caught fire from an unattended stove."

Ah-Ho Relations,

This is South Dakota, anti-Indian racism at its very worst. We need to help these people in any way we can. Alfred Boneshirt is standing up to some vicious racist wasicu in Winner who are completely used to intimidating Lakota people out of their rights and dignity. And what a horrible farce the defendants are getting as representation, in Winner it is common for court appointed lawyers to sell out ndn clients but this is just too damn blatant to tolerate. What can we do with our computers and phones my friends? Can we call and email the Judge, Sheriff and Lawyers? Should we call the State A.G. to report what is going on? How about the state bar association on that defense lawyer? How about calls to that racist newspaper and other South Dakota news outlets demanding they cover this properly. I don't know what all we can do to help, but this and other ndn lists have done a lot to help in other actions like this. I do know it's shame on us if we can't do something to help Alfred and the family who are putting themselves on the line for another ndn being railroaded. Just think, even the parents whose children were burned to death are supporting justice for Phillip Dog Soldier, the very least we can do is speak up! Please send this request around the internet and lets see if we can shine some light on Winner.

Thank You All,

Carter Camp

Today we found out that Lester four Horns was taken to the res. in at Carter, SD then transferred to the Winner, Jail, he is to be a witness in Phillips case. We are wondering how he was taken off our lands since Our tribe controls the jurisdiction, The deputy sherif said four horns turned himself in because of a suboena. That also seemed out of the ordinary cause I seen him several days eariler in St. Francis, SD(drinking), We wonder why they wouldn't give Phillip Dog Soldier a bond and let him out to his sister, They were reported as saying no bail because his sister lived on the Reservation town of Wood, SD just a few miles from the county line. Phillip told us today the police have a court hold on him., his name was still up on the board at the jail., Phillips attorney has tried to put a wedge between us, He told the court (judge) we were bothering him, asking to many questions and confronting him. The questions were not in a cronfront they were legal questions about the way the court was rail roading Mr. Dog Soldier. It's very obvious they hate our Intervention on Phillip Dog Soldier behalf, Phillip is a 51 year old full blood speaking Lakota man who is a target of a Racist Winner chief of Police. Whose Police Dept is currently being sued by a woman dispatcher named Linda Phillips for sexual harassment. The article is in the Winner Advocate newspaper phone 605-842-1481. This newspaer wouldn't have any thing to due with us Grass Roots Oyate and Aimsters, They refused to cover the story of Racism in their town. Among the threats coming from the white boys, men and even women were that they got our pictures and we all were going to jail We were just Fuc***g Indians. Not only is there obvious fabrication of these charges again Mr. Phillip Dog Soldier, Its very obvious that they don't want us there. Already the situation is beyond critical today one of the jurors was passing Arnold Songer, who was in the hallway just outside of the courtroom, the jurors were returning from a break, when one of the male white jurors, sent Arnold a " THUMBS UP SIGNAL" Arnold has witnesses to this and wrote it up. He told us that he took it as the jury already made a decision. Today we gave Phillip a special Eagle feather and We humbly ask that those who may read this message. Please say a Prayer for Phillip Dog Soldier, Arnold & Sue Songer( parents) They will tell you also that the know and feel Phillip didn't do this.
Aho Hecetu Yelo,
I am sincerely Alfred Bone Shirt.
Tomorrow We go to stand with Phillip Dog Soldier and family.
