Yankton Jurisdiction

Because the Yankton tribe is so small, and the land base is also small, tribal jurisdiction has eroded to the forces of the State of South Dakota and local municipal governments. Yankton tribal homes and land are “checkerboard”, so there are no large parcels of contiguous land (e.g. 20,000 acres). Tribal mismanagement has resulted in a loss of funding for many tribal services. Since the need for these services still exists, the state is required to provide services in the absence of tribal programs. This has led to the jurisdiction problem. Many of us are concerned that other DLN reservations may begin to face the same fate, particularly if people continue to sell off allotted land to non-Indians. DLN needs to begin the work needed to regain tribal jurisdiction so that the Yankton Oyate no longer need to fear the very real prospect of BIA termination. There are many issues on Yankton that occupy activists; however, this issue desperately needs to be thoroughly and systematically brought back under the control of the Ihanktonwan Dakota Oyate.

That piece of red, white and blue cloth stands for a system and a country that does not honor it's own word...If it stood for honor and truth, it would remember our treaties and give them the appropriate place under international law. But it doesn't. It dishonors its own word and violates its treaties...
