DLN Issues : The Selling of Indian Culture

The White Buffalo Calf Pipe Commercialized

From the Dakota Lakota Journal, Volume 8, Issue 28, June 29 to July 6 2007

Along with the exploitation and marketing of our very Sacred Bundle, it has also been assimilated in with NEW AGE religion under the auspices of "Interfaith Religion", which is a fancy word for New Age religion. According to many web sites and articles that are out on the internet about Arvols' endeavors, in which almost all of them have been a part of this new "Interfaith Religion", that Wolakota Foundation has been actively promoting thru their " ALL NATIONS, ALL FAITHS, ONE PRAYER", logo and with their World Peace and Prayer Day activities, that Arvol and Wolakota Foundation, who Arvol supposedly founded, strongly supports and promotes this Interfaith Religion, by partaking in their activities and is utilizing Wolakota Foundation to spread the word throughout the world. Wolakota Foundation is also listed as an Interfaith Religion site on the internet. Since when did our Beautiful Way of Life, become a religion? We all know as an Oyate that our way of life is spirituality and not a religion, but it is promoted by our Keeper and his partner Paula Horne as a religion throughout the world and on the internet as such. Who decided that Wolakota Foundation could market our Sacred Bundle and way of life by selling the "White Buffalo Teachings", a book that Arvol had written and has sold to these "Mystery Schools", that teach New Age Religion, so they could incorporate these teachings into their New Age beliefs,so that they could profit off of our way of life. Who is benefiting from all of this? Surely not our youth, elders or any of our people that Arvol and Paula propose to help, as it states on their web pages. And who are the elders that Arvol and Paula said gave him permission to do all of this? The elders the people see with him, are from other tribes, not our elders, as our elders have respect and knowledge to not abuse or misuse our Sacred Bundle. What is even worse is that Wolakota Foundation has a Copyright on all of their content that is a part of their organization and is considered their property, which includes the "White Buffalo Teachings", the book Arvol had written about the Sacred Bundle, pictures of Miracle, the first white Buffalo Calf that was born, which they are also marketing and selling items with his pictures on them, as well as him being on the cover of the book that was written and the drawings that have white animals including the white buffalo that they have put on items to market and sell as profit for their own self gain. Copyright laws have been applied to what is held sacred by our people, and once again the federal government is controlling what is sacred to our people and saying who has rights to them and saying Wolakota Foundation, an organization does, when these teachings were given to us by our Creator and were NOT meant to be marketed and sold for profit for self gain. No one "OWNS" our teachings and the gifts from the Creator that was meant for our people to use to help us, such as Arvol does not own the Sacred Bundle but is the Keeper of it, the care taker as well as he doesn't "own " the teachings either to copyright it as such. It is all on their web site for the people to view for themselves. Such as other caretakers of bundles, he is to be with it, so why is he in Mexico City now and who knows where. Is he exploiting it for more money now? As this is scamming season. Where did it say in our teachings and prophecies that our Keeper was to sell our beautiful way of life, for his and his partners' self gain? And that our way of life was to go out into the World and to be assimilated into other religions?

Who benefited from these money making schemes, on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe reservation or any other reservations? Wolakota Foundation is founded on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe reservation and is the home of where our Sacred Bundle is kept and where our so called Keeper lives and whereas none of his people who reside on this reservation have not benefited from or been assisted in any way by Wolakota Foundation or by the Keeper, Arvol Looking Horse and his partner Paula Horne, except his partners' family. For a family who doesn't have an income, then where does all of these vehicles, expensive clothes and other items, come for these eight children of Paulas? What is happening to our way of life is Cultural Genocide!! and Assimilation into the dominant society, that is what the New Age religion/interfaith Religion is about, to create a New World order? There are many articles on the internet about this theory and if these " Interfaith Religion" groups want to combine religions including our Sacred Bundle then it is cultural genocide as they want to assimilate our way of life into theirs. Once again our Keeper and his partner, thru Wolakota Foundation is perpetrating what the Federal government has done to our people, using the same old tactics of Assimilation, Genocide, and having these two individuals use the age old tactics, of divide and conquer.

Only harsh words and lies about those who stand up for the Sacred Bundle are what comes from the mouths of the Keeper and his partner, never has there been an invitation to talk about all of this when it first started and to pray together, but threats to be prosecuted by them for talking about it and alot of anger is what came out of their mouths way before it became public, as they were given a chance to talk to us about it. Arvol was approached and told that all of this will go public and that the people will know what is going on with the Sacred Bundle, and he said to " Go ahead, it is already out there." But they want to hold anyone liable for questioning them and what they do for fund raising efforts and what they do with "their" money when it starts pouring in. During the spiritual run for 2007 they advertised it on their website and made it look like it was a run for the pipe, which was on their headlines as such and solicited money for it along with their run. They made it appear like it was a part of their activity. Why did they say they ran into Mexico City on their youth council website, when it was told they probably flew into Mexico. They are soliciting $1500.00 or more per runner, and it lists what the expenses are, so they are asking for more money than the amount stated and what they raise will be way more than what is asked as they solicit many organizations and private donors, such as last years run, when an estimated $48,000. to $50,000. was raised for last years run, which was run thru Arvol and Gracies' account. It was advertised on public service announcements that this spiritual run for the sacred pipe was insinuated that it was all for the sacred pipe in Green Grass, no one explained that it was really for the pipestone quarry. We find out the runners didn't know that it was being advertised on Wolakotas' website and appeared to be a part of their event, who knew the difference? Either way, Wolakota Foundation appears to be profiting from this run also. These are questions and thoughts that have come from many of our Oyate and are afraid to question Arvol about. Why is it that our People feel they have to be afraid to stand up for what we all know is right in out hearts? We all have that right as a Nation of people to question what is wrong ESPECIALLY when it concerns our most Sacred Bundle and no one should have to be afraid to question Arvol and his partner for they are just common human beings too. Paula never does ANYTHING without soliciting funds for what ever they do, as neither holds a "real job", as she is just a TANF mother, this includes fund raising for the Sundance too. Even Arvol has stated that if we see things that are wrong we need to question it and speak up about it where it concerns our beautiful way of life and our Sacred Bundle. Ho hecetu elo!

That piece of red, white and blue cloth stands for a system and a country that does not honor it's own word...If it stood for honor and truth, it would remember our treaties and give them the appropriate place under international law. But it doesn't. It dishonors its own word and violates its treaties...
