Prison Specific Info/Donation Information
From the South Dakota Prisoner's Support Group:
1) 10/22/01 updated 9-03 *Shawl donations requested for the Dublin Federal Correctional Institution in California. We need finished shawls and shawl making supplies, like fringe, cloth for shawl making, ribbons, crochet hooks etc. for their Pow Wows. There are a number of Native American women in the Dublin FCI Womens Prison in Dublin, CA who are from South Dakota and other States. If you can help with any of these items please contact us or the Prison Chaplain for more information.
2) 10/22/01 updated 9-03 We have received letters about needing sage, sweet grass, and flat cedar for sweat lodge ceremonies and pipe ceremonies and individual needs. Please, If you can help with these items, contact the individual Cultural Coordinators at each DOC facility.
The latest information that I received from Mary Montoya from the Sioux Falls Prisons:
1) No food can be donated to either the Springfield or the Sioux Falls Prisons.
2) Money is what all the groups need the most for the Wacipis (Pow Wows).
3. Craft items may not be donated.
4) Donations of cloth for ties, sage, red willow bark, sweet grass, flat cedar and bitter root are welcomed! Please don't send tobacco.
5) Donations of field stone and/or lava rocks are welcomed. Call Mary Montoya or Mark Reed to make arrangements to deliver them.
Donations for the use of a particular inmate should have a note enclosed giving that inmate's name.
Donations of money, cloth, and botanicals for the Sioux Falls prisons should be mailed or brought to Mary Montoya, 3508 S Minnesota Ave, Ste. 100, Sioux Falls SD 57105 Mary's phone number at her outside job is 1-888-861-7949 or (605) 336-7213. Her number at the prison is (605) 367-5008. Mary is generally at the prison all day on Mondays.

6) 10/22/01 Some groups are non-profit organizations, so donations can be tax deductable I beleive in most cases. I am not up on the IRS rulings on this ... But certainly donations are needed and appreciated.

Jameson Annex

(From the State Corrections website): The G. Norton Jameson Annex opened in February 1993, as a secure unit adjacent to the main building of the South Dakota State Penitentiary.
The Jameson Annex contains two housing units within a secure perimeter, Unit A and Unit B. These units are utilized for maximum custody inmates and as a disciplinary segregation unit. Also located in the Jameson Annex are the Admissions and Orientation Unit for new inmates entering the South Dakota Department of Corrections and the Mental Health Unit. There is a minimum security unit located outside the perimeter fence, Unit C. Inmates housed in the Jameson Annex are offered literacy, ABE and GED classes. Chemical dependency treatment is also available.
Mike Durfee State Prison

(From the DOC website.) The Mike Durfee State Prison sign is located outside Gill Hall, which houses the prison's administrative offices. The Mike Durfee State Prison is located on the campus of the former University of South Dakota at Springfield. The 1984 Legislature closed USD/S and authorized the Board of Charities and Corrections to establish the correctional facility. Springfield State Prison opened in December of 1984 when the female inmates from the Women's Correctional Facility in Yankton, SD were transferred to the new institution. Male inmates began transferring to the institution in January 1985. The institution remained co-ed with both males and females located on the same campus for several years. With the opening of the Herm Solem Public Safety Center in Pierre, SD in November 1997, the women were transferred to the South Dakota Women's Prison within the Solem Public Safety Center, and the Springfield State Prison became an all-male institution for the first time. On September 10, 1999 the prison was renamed in honor of Mike Durfee, Deputy Director of the South Dakota Department of Corrections. Literacy, Adult Basic Education and GED classes are offered. Vocational Education classes in Welding, Machine Tool, Auto Body, Business and Occupations, Landscape/Horticulture and Building/Custodial are also offered. Treatment programs are available for chemical dependents and sex offenders.

Redfield Trusty Unit
Redfield Trusty Unit and Redfield images (From the DOC website.) Minimum custody status inmates of the Department of Corrections are housed in Redfield. The Trusty Unit provides a location in which adult male inmates work and live in an environment different than that of the main prison facility. The inmates supply the support, in the form of labor, at the Developmental Center, as well as to other state and county agencies. Inmates receive treatment for alcohol and drug abuse and can also take GED classes. The Redfield Trusty Unit is under the direct supervision of the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls, and Warden Doug Weber. Randy Christensen is the Unit Manager of the RTU.

South Dakota State Penitentiary
South Dakota State Penitentiary and SDSP images (From the DOC website) The main penitentiary facility contains three housing units; West, South and North. The G. Norton Jameson Annex began housing inmates in February 1993. The Jameson Annex contains two housing units within a secure perimeter and a minimum security unit located outside the perimeter fence. A minimum security unit is also located at the Redfield Trusty Unit in Redfield, South Dakota. Inmate employment within the Penitentiary falls into two basic categories; institutional support and prison industries. Institutional support includes those employed in food service, as clerks for various departments, as cell orderlies and those working in maintenance. Prison Industries consists of upholstery, printing, sign, decal, housing, license plates, carpentry, book bindery, machine shop, Braille unit, garments and data entry. All but the housing, garment and data entry work is done at the Penitentiary. Most of the work is done for government agencies. Inmates are offered literacy, Adult Basic Education and GED classes. Treatment if also offered for chemical dependency and sex offenders.

South Dakota Women's Prison
South Dakota Women's Prison and SDWP images (From the DOC website.) The South Dakota Women's Prison is part of the Solem Public Safety Center, a unique facility that houses a prison, state corrections offices, and law enforcement agencies of the state, county and city governments. In 1995, legislation was introduced that authorized the construction of a new women's prison in Pierre. After the passage of the bill, the idea was pursued of joining resources with local governments to best utilize the new facility. The completed facility includes the new state Women's Prison, the Central Office of the state Department of Corrections, Pierre Police Department, Hughes County Sheriff's office, a State Highway Patrol station, and State Division of Criminal Investigation agents. The Women's Prison portion of the facility constitutes the majority of the 78,000 square foot building.
The South Dakota Women's Prison opened and was dedicated on October 23, 1997. Prison Industries at the Women's Prison includes data entry for government agencies. Inmates can take classes for literacy, Adult Basic Education and GED as well as receive treatment for chemical dependency and for sex offenses.

Yankton Trusty Unit
Yankton Trusty Unit (From the DOC website.) The Yankton Trusty Unit is a minimum security male facility under the direction of the Mike Durfee State Prison and Warden Bob Dooley. It opened in the early 1970's to provide support services for the Human Services Center and it has grown over the years to a working unit with a population of 150 to 240 adult inmates. The unit supplies workers for several different programs. On a daily basis, inmates work for support services for the Human Services Center, Community Service Projects, and Work Release. The unit also provides a treatment unit with drug and alcohol treatment classes, both long term and relapse.
