DLN Nation : Tribal and Traditional Government

Judicial Standards

2002 Setp 30

This is what I submitted to several local South Dakota Newspapers, I wanted to share with you.

Dear Editor,

Hope you don't mind my reference to a article In the September 25,2002 issue of the Todd County Tribune which circulates on the area of Todd County, and boundaries of the Rosebud Sioux Indian reservation. " RST to revive Tribal AG's Office" This is a step in the right direction in Our Tribal Justice system. I notice where the Tribal Council passed amendments to revive the Attorney generals office. I see where the Tribe is putting high standards with this position to meet certain qualifications, Why stop with this position of upgrading these standards? Our Judges who work here should also have these high qualifications. I don't think its right where a clique here on the Rosebud Indian reservation can use illegal trickery to circumvent our tribal Jurisdiction and what little tribal sovereignty we may have left. It the past several weeks it appears that certain special interest Groups can influence and try and keep a proclaimed biased non-Indian member of the Tribal Court. Our Elected leadership also should be held accountable to certain Standards, especially those who are on the RST Judicial committee. We don't permit felons to sit on the Police force, so why have some sitting in a position over the Judicial and law enforcement here on Our reservation. Is this where the break down is concerning these recent complaints of Violations against the Judge, Court and mainly Police stepping out of line and violating Our tribal members rights? We need to make this a Election issue! Our People deserve the best. Failed leadership would open the door for more Erosion against our Tribal jurisdiction and status as a Nation , In recent weeks we have heard of Our Councilmen being involved in acts of violence against our tribal members, But all seem to ignore or condone actions by Council reps. We don't have a enforceable Ethics Code or even a working ethics committee that can or could do something. Its just a rubber stamp, a ploy used to buy time in the illegal trickery in play here on the Rosebud. We have some Council representatives who are for real and are trying to work for the People, but are being held down by this elite clique we have in motion here. Wake up.

That piece of red, white and blue cloth stands for a system and a country that does not honor it's own word...If it stood for honor and truth, it would remember our treaties and give them the appropriate place under international law. But it doesn't. It dishonors its own word and violates its treaties...
