U.N. official 'shocked' by conditions on reserves

TUESDAY, MAY 6, 2003

From Indianz.com

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Situation of the Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous People was "shocked" by the conditions on First Nations reserves in Manitoba, CBC News reports.

"I saw poverty which impressed me because I didn't expect to find poverty, in conditions of living, the housing, particularly the housing situation," said Rodolfo Stavenhagen. "I was told about unemployment and about problems regarding other social services such as healthcare and education."

Stavenhagen's visit to three reserves wasn't an official U.N. excursion but he plans one in the future.

United Nations official takes look at Manitoba reserves

Web Posted | May 5 2003 08:17 AM CDT

WINNIPEG - A United Nations official is surprised at what he saw on some Manitoba First Nations reserves.

Rodolfo Stavenhagen is the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of the Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous People. He reports to the U.N.'s Commission on Human Rights.

Stavenhagen's visit was at the invitation of the Southern Chief's Organization. On Sunday, he visited the First Nations communities of Little Grand Rapids, Paungassi and Sagkeeng.

Stavenhagen was surprised by what he saw.

"I saw poverty which impressed me because I didn't expect to find poverty, in conditions of living, the housing, particularly the housing situation," says Stavenhagen. "I was told about unemployment and about problems regarding other social services such as healthcare and education."

Stavenhagen stresses this was not an official United Nations visit. He says he will be making an official tour of Canada to examine conditions on First Nations communities when he receives an invitation from the federal government.

That piece of red, white and blue cloth stands for a system and a country that does not honor it's own word...If it stood for honor and truth, it would remember our treaties and give them the appropriate place under international law. But it doesn't. It dishonors its own word and violates its treaties...
